Extensive Experience
Before joining the Law Firm of E. Tay Bond in 2025, Joel served for over 24 years as a prosecutor in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, attaining the rank of Felony Trial Chief. During his tenure as an assistant district attorney, Joel handled and tried virtually every type of criminal case, from misdemeanors, to complex financial crimes, to multiple capital murders. He also served as the head of numerous specialized divisions within the office, including serving as the Chief of the Intake Division, the Public Integrity Division and the Financial Crimes Division. Before joining the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, Joel gained in-depth experience in complex litigation at two large corporate law firms. His extensive experience in criminal law and litigation assures clients that he understands both the law and how to effectively navigate the intricacies of the criminal justice system.
Board Certification in Criminal Law
Joel is board certified as a specialist in criminal law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He attained this distinction in 2009, after completing a lengthy application process and passing a rigorous day long examination over state and federal criminal law. Approximately one percent of Texas lawyers has this elite certification.
Education at Harvard Law School
Joel prepared for his career in law by attending Harvard Law School, graduating cum laude in 1996. While at Harvard, Joel served on the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy and gained early litigation experience as a student advocate with the Jamaica Plain Legal Services Center. Before attending Harvard, Joel graduated summa cum laude and first in his class from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, with a double major in Philosophy and English. He attended SMU on an academic scholarship and was a member of the university honors program.
Personal
Joel was born in Pasadena, Texas and was raised in Deer Park and LaPorte, Texas. Growing up, his mother was a high school teacher, and his father was a Houston Police Officer. He lives in The Woodlands, Montgomery County, Texas with his wife of 30 years. They have lived in the same home since 2003 where they raised two children who attended schools in the Conroe Independent School District
